You are expected to know what a financial statement is, what a judge is actually listening for, and what happens when you spend your time in front of the judge describing what your spouse is like instead of what the record shows. Nobody tells you. Most people find out by getting it wrong once.
What you file in the first weeks follows you through the whole case. It is far harder to correct a bad financial statement than to file a good one.
Judges decide quickly whether you are organized and honest. Once that impression is set, everything you say afterwards is weighed against it.

Who is teaching this

Massachusetts bar, 1992. Thirty-four years of child welfare litigation alongside a private family practice — paternity, custody and guardianship — including ten years as a partner at Nasios & Galloway, LLP. In 2017 she finished a Master of Arts in Psychoanalysis at the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis. She is a daughter of divorce herself, and a divorced mother of two adult sons, which is its own qualification.

Tracy's courtroom is in Massachusetts, and that is where her examples come from — but the three nights are about preparation, not local procedure. The financial disclosure, the documentation habit, the way credibility is built or lost in front of a judge: those are the same in every county in the country. What differs are the forms, the filing fees and the local rules, and you will leave knowing exactly which of those to go and check for your own court.
